What kind of genetic test would be needed in this case?
If historians want to learn about a historical figure’s maternal ancestry, can they test any of their descendants?

For example, if I wanted to find out the ethnicity of Abraham Lincoln’s’ mother, could I test one of Lincoln’s descendants? Would I have to test one of Lincoln’s sisters’ descendants instead? How does this work? Thank you!

Answer by BearPuncher
You would look at the mitochondrial DNA sequence of Lincoln. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed through the mother, so it is the best way to look at maternal ancestry.

Conversely, if you wanted paternal inheritance you would do Y chromosome sequencing since Y chromosomes are only passed from father to son. Only downside is that women don’t have Y chromosome so to get paternal inheritance you would have to get a brother’s DNA.

Why hasn’t Obama quoted the rest of Lincoln? He seems enamored with myth. Why not truth?
Could it be for the same reasons voters digress from issues to emotion?

Let Obama tackle things we real Americans must. Why not start with who wrote “Amazing Grace” and the story behind its lyrics?

Or, how about quotes that actually defined Lincoln before his death, like:

“I will say, then, that I am not,
– - nor have ever been,
– - in favor of bringing about
– - – in anyway
– - the social and political equality
– - of the white and black races
– that I am not, nor have ever been,
– - in favor of making voters or jurors of n**roes,
– - nor of qualifying them
– - – to hold office,
– - – nor to intermarry with white people;
– - – and I will say in addition to this that
– - – - there is a physical difference between the white and black races…
– - – I, as much as any other man,
– - – am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

– Abraham Lincoln

and…

“I have never said any thing to the contrary, but I hold that notwithstanding all this, there is no reason in the world why the n**ro is not entitled to all the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence—the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I hold that he is as much entitled to these as the white man. I agree with Judge Douglas that he is not my equal in many respects, certainly not in color—perhaps not in intellectual and moral endowments; but in the right to eat the bread without the leave of any body else which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every other man.”

– Abraham Lincoln

These things rarely come to light, now, despite similar expressions of ignorance held by most people of the time, regardless of background, race, ethnicity and education.

So, then, why?

Real…Lib…Bias: Nice try but these are direct quotes that history seems determined to ignore. We ignore facts of history to our own detriment. How can we learn from the mistakes of history if we refuse to see it plainly?

Steve G: My family moved to IL from KY at the same time the Lincolns did. I certainly know of the air-brushed image historians cling to. But no American should stop asking why he resorted to war despite numerous successful cases of nations ending slavery without firing a shot?

So, you’re trying to justify racism?

Nice.

Answer by Dude
Funny how the liberal media tried to portray him as the next Lincoln or FDR when he was elected. So far he has been the next Jimmy Carter. Carter Part 2.

Most of his voters ask: What come is the health care plan going to help us?
