
Why do most forms of media use “USS” and not “U.S.S.” when printing ship names? In media, whether fictional spaceships or the US navy’s own brochures they use “USS Enterprise, Abraham Lincoln , etc” instead of “U.S.S.”. Is there any reason behind this? In regards to first answer: but then why was it written SS Titanic and not S.S. Titanic? Answer by the old dogIt comes from the steam ship days. Commercial “steam ships” had the SS before the name of the ship, like the SS Titanic, but warships or military ships were designated with another letter. I’ve forgotten what the “U” represents but the “SS” after the U still means “Steam Ship”.
