What is the value of acceleration .. for the equation below?
I was asked this question in physics but was confused on the question when it asks what is the value of acceleration .. but in the problem it says the acceleration is constant.. If anyone can help me out that be great!!

The catapult of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln accelerates an F/A – 18 Harnet jet fighter from rest to take off speed of 173 mi/hr in a distance of 307 ft. Assume that the acceleration is constant.

How much time( in seconds does it take for the plane to take off?

what is the value of the acceleration of the fighter in m/s2

can’t do it all for you, sorry…hope i helped

Answer by Donut Tim
104.85 feet per second per second (31.958 m/s/s) acceleration. That’s 3.256 times the acceleration of gravity (G’s).

The answer from “Steve” is exactly correct. He seems to be a very sharp guy. I couldn’t figure out the time but now with Steve’s formula – I know how!
.

Answer by Taftnee
u have to use this formula a= final velocity minus inital velocity divided by time…i think…but first you convert the hours to sec.

Answer by Steve
There is no conflict in asking for the (constant) value of the acceleration:

a = V²/2x = [173*22/15]²/(2*307) = 104.85 ft/sec² = 31.95 m/s²

t = √[2x/a] = √[2*307/104.85] = 2.42 sec

You should object to problems posed in English units with answers required in metric units……

“Detailed, passionate and convincing . . . [with] the pace and grip of a good thriller.”–Anatol Lieven, The New York Times Book Review

“Regime change” did not begin with the administration of George W. Bush, but has been an integral part of U.S. foreign policy for more than one hundred years. Starting with the toppling of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the United States has not hesitated to overthrow governments that stood in the way of its political and economic goals. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 is but the latest example of the dangers inherent in these operations.
In Overthrow, Stephen Kinzer tells the stories of the audacious politicians, spies, military commanders, and business executives who took it upon themselves to depose foreign regimes. He details the three eras of America’s regime-change century–the imperial era, which brought Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Nicaragua, and Honduras under America’s sway; the cold war era, which employed covert action against Iran, Guatemala, South Vietnam, and Chile; and the invasion era, which saw American troops toppling governments in Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Kinzer explains why the U.S. government has pursued these operations and why so many of them have had disastrous long-term consequences, making Overthrow a cautionary tale that serves as an urgent warning as the United States seeks to define its role in the modern world.

Should the current Iraq war be classified as a WAR?
A war is fought between two or more troops. But OIF was mostly between the coalition forces and the ordinary Iraqi civilians(or so called insurgents for the Americans and freedom fighters for the Iraqis) who were quite pissed off with the brutality of the US occupation and the violent nature of the US military, considering the fact that entire Iraqi army had been defeated and eliminated with in a few months of invasion( if we remember May 2003, when George W Bush had said the US has prevailed in the Battle of Iraq in a speech on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln).

We are always told that OIF was very unconventional war where there was no front-line and the enemy didn’t wear any uniform. But I think there is a logical fallacy in this assumption. The front line was actually their(Iraqis) home and the enemy was just a civilian,a father, or a teacher, or a teenager ,or a farmer, simply resisting to free his nation from a brutal occupation.
Also, “Haji ” was the most common term to describe an Iraqi enemy.But infact Haji wasn’t only the enemy. Haji was every Iraqi. He was a person, or a father, or a teacher, or a worker with troops deriding “haji food,” “haji music” and “haji homes”. Hey, go ask that haji where we can buy some food. Stupid haji’s, try so hard, yet succeed so little. You tell that f***** haji that if we get sniped one more f****** time through here, we’re gonna level this f******* place.

Answer by Travis
Thats a good question. I would call it a peace keeping mission at the moment. Im just trying to figure out why you think its a “brutal occupation”. Most civilian deaths in Iraq are caused by insurgent action. You know, the type of action including indiscriminate use of IED’s, bombing mosques, hijacking buses full of people and executing everyone on board. When American soldiers kill civilians its almost always because insurgents are trying to use them as cover. Seriously though, if you consider the US occupation “brutal” then what do you consider Saddam Hussein’s government to be?

The insurgency began because there was a vacuum of power, not because of a “brutal occupation”.

Please set your hatred of the US aside and try and see things with a little less bias.
