I have attached several links, to the collected writings of Lincoln, from the University of Michigan, to Sam Wheeler’s Lincoln Studies page, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Politics:

The movement of the state capitol from Vandalia to Springfield, Lincoln was instrumental in this, and some of the politics were rather questionable. The incident where he and a number of other Whigs climbed through a window, in order to avoid a vote they’d lose, by removing enough members to suggest the absence of a quorum, was related to this.

The term in Congress. Lamon says that there was a deal made, between Lincoln and two other men, where one would run for Congress, while the other two supported him, and in exchange, he’d serve one term, and then campaign for the next in line. Lincoln was the second in line for the seat, but lost when the first man refused to support him, which abrogated the agreement, and Lincoln and the third man campaigned against the first man, and Lincoln won his seat in the following election. He did serve only one term.

Lincoln is known for only one thing in this term, he made the speech insisting that the President draw the line that showed the real border between Mexico and Texas, as it was disputed whether it was the Rio Grande (called Rio Bravo in Mexico) or the Nueces Rivers. It was an important point because where Taylor’s men were was between the two rivers when fired upon by the Mexican force. If it was the Rio Grande, then the Mexican soldiers were the invaders, if not, then the US soldiers were.

The Presidency

He sent Lamon to Charleston secretly to try and convince the Governor of South Carolina to return to the Union, the governor treated Lamon cordially, but refused.

He is blamed for the destruction of the presses of several anti-Lincoln newspapers in the north during the war. No evidence I have seen shows the President’s approval, but I’ve seen no evidence that any of the men who did the smashing were prosecuted.

He did suspend habeous Corpus for the duration. It had originally been a short term measure, but after the business with the gold rumors, which actually implicated Salmon Chase, secretary of the treasury, and two newspaper reporters, it was continued throughout the war. The first article of the Constitution gives this right to Congress, in a time of national crisis or rebellion, but it was excercised by the President.

Mrs. Lincoln did have a brother in law as a serving officer in the Confederate Army. He was seriously wounded, and Lincoln gave permission for his wife and mother in law, who lived in Kentucky, to travel through the lines to bring him home to recover. This was an understandable, but something that would cause both Lincolns trouble in the press.

There was always a blockade around the south, and no goods could be sent north for sale. A few individuals were given passes to transfer seized cotton north where it could be sold. Although the generals, including Grant, strongly objected, Lincoln did sign some of these passes.

at the end of the list of links I have added the Recollections of Abraham Lincoln, by Ward Hill Lamon, his former law partner, and wartime body guard. Lamon used to sleep on the floor outside Lincoln’s bedroom door.

America’s greatest president, who rose to power in the country’s greatest hour of need and whose vision saw the United States through the Civil War

Abraham Lincoln towers above the others who have held the office of president—the icon of greatness, the pillar of strength whose words bound up the nation’s wounds. His presidency is the hinge on which American history pivots, the time when the young republic collapsed of its own contradictions and a new birth of freedom, sanctified by blood, created the United States we know today. His story has been told many times, but never by a man who himself sought the office of president and contemplated the awesome responsibilities that come with it.

George S. McGovern—a Midwesterner, former U.S. senator, presidential candidate, veteran, and historian by training—offers his unique insight into our sixteenth president. He shows how Lincoln sometimes went astray, particularly in his restrictions on civil liberties, but also how he adjusted his sights and transformed the Civil War from a political dispute to a moral crusade. McGovern’s account reminds us why we hold Lincoln in such esteem and why he remains the standard by which all of his successors are measured.

The speech was delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during the American Civil War, about four months after the Battle of Gettysburg.
