How did USA 16 president Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves?
Answer by bmerr71
It was called the Civil War
Answer by classmate
Lincoln didn’t actually “free the slaves.” His Emancipation Proclamation, issued during the Civil War, proclaimed freedom for all slaves in the 11 rebellious states that were waging war against the United States, but not in the five “border states,” slave states that remained loyal to the Union. It was not until the 13th Amendment was added to the Constitution that slavery was abolished everywhere in the U.S.
Answer by Hibee
Most other countries had abolished slavery long before then, and it made USA look bad.

Classmate is technically correct, but in such a narrow way as to be nearly meaningless…although the Civil War did not start as such, by the time it ended, it had definitively turned into an anti-slavery crusade, at least from the Union point of view. Even Lincoln himself alludes to this in the Gettysburg address: ” …that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom…” What possible meaning does that have, in terms of preserving the Union, rather than a call for the end of slavery?
And also, while it is true that the 13th Am. outlawed slavery, it was the Civil War that ended it.

THIS EDITION IS INTENDED FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Traces the African American slave experience through paintings beginning with the Middle Passage and concluding with images of post-Civil War emancipation.Slavery is a difficult concept to address with children, especially because many adults would prefer to forget that period of American history. In From Slave Ship to Freedom Road, award-winning author Julius Lester takes older children (and adults) on an intense, personal journey through the slave experience. As he gently explains the factual horrors of slave-ship conditions, auction blocks, plantation life, and the risks associated with escape, Lester consistently prods young readers with probing questions: “How would I feel if that happened to me?” “Would you risk going to jail to help someone you didn’t know?” “You are free, but are you?” Lester also asks us to imagine the voices and feelings of the African Americans in the illustrations–another brilliant call for active participation.
Rod Brown’s paintings are achingly vivid, so much so that a few may be too powerful for younger children. Certain depictions are difficult even for adults to bear: a lynched man with the bloody blows of a whip marking his back; slaves stacked seven-high in the hold of a ship, packed onto shelves with less room than the drawers of a morgue; and black bodies bobbing in the ocean. These are horrible images, but nonetheless historically accurate and important to remember. Brown took seven years to create these startling images, and his careful attention is reflected in the paintings’ power and emotion. Children may be initially startled by From Slave Ship to Freedom Road, but they will also be engaged and enlightened. (Ages 10 to 13)

Do you think Abraham Lincoln only freed the slaves because?
he had a black slave girlfriend? not trying to be rude but i think about that a lot.i mean history books don’t tell you what happen the private lives of people from the past.even if people knew they weren’t going to write in a history book”lincoln was with his slave cook and had 3 unknown children”. i think he had a slave girlfriend and she “convinced” him that slavery was wrong and she threaten to tell about them if he didn’t free the slaves. could this be true.
Answer by Hey there, lovely
I don’t think so.. I’m pretty sure they didn’t have slaves where he was.
And I’m pretty sure he was just a person with sense.
Answer by Jon
He did what was politically expedient to save the union
Answer by Marvin R
Seriously doubt if this rumor had any bearing on freeing the slaves. There were other reasons which were more a factor than mere personal gain. Besides the Civil War had other major causes than freeing slaves because there were slaves in Northern States during this period of time.
One of the major causes for the War was to keep the country as one and not divided into two separate countries. If this had happened then the U.S. would not have become a strong country.
Answer by Lenny
No.
Lincoln was personally against slavery as majority of Americans were in those days.
Confederate general Robert E. Lee also called slavery a deplorable institution.
But Lincoln was not ready to fight a war to free slaves.
He fought war to keep all States in the Union.
His Emancipation Proclamation was a calculated political move to make South look unacceptable partner for abolition-minded European powers.
It declared slaves free only in the Southern states. It did not free slaves in the states supporting the Union where he actually had the power to give orders. This fact shows that “freedom” was the last thing on Lincoln’s mind at that time.
But regardless to the motives behind making slaves free, it was the great beneficial step to US.
Lincoln’s Legacy (Blast to the Past)
Abigail loves Mondays, and so does the rest of class 305. That’s the day Mr. Caruthers asks them cool questions about history. Today Mr. C asks, “What if Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves?” Abigail and her friends are ready to put their thinking caps on. But this time Mr. C wants them to do more than put their heads together-he wants them to travel back in time!
Turns out the “What If?” questions are real, and Mr. C has just come back from a visit to the past. He needs their help because it looks like President Lincoln might quit and never free the slaves! With a time-travel gadget and only two hours to spare, Abigail and her friends are going back to the past. But even though time traveling isn’t hard, convincing Abraham Lincoln not to give up isn’t going to be easy….
With a dollop of The Magic Tree House, a dash of Back to the Future, and pinch of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Blast to the Past is a recipe for fun!

Abraham Lincoln Freed The Slaves With The Emancipation Proclamation. Abraham Lincoln Was A Republican?
My question is why are the largest percentage of African-Americans Democrats (Like the Ku Klux Klan)
Answer by Robert J
Because the Republican party of the time wasn’t really conservation but rather federalist. Stemming from the whig and federalist parties. Basically the republican party then and now has no relation.
Answer by The Last Lamoe
The answer are three presidents FDR who was the first to really reach ot to Black people, JFK (I’m still puzzling over that one) and LBJ who really fought for civil rights bills, even if he was a Southern Democrat.
The last is a leadership who where young and involved during the civil rights era and lets face it most of the supporters where Northern Democrats. Those against where Southern Democrats and Republicans. It doesn’t help that most of the Media are Democratic, and are prone to downplay the Southern Dem’s and demonize the Re-pubs
Answer by Chances68
In the 150 years or so since the Civil War, the two dominant parties have changed their roles pretty significantly. By the 1930′s, it was clear that the Democrats were the ones who were most closely aligned with the interests of the poorer segments in America, while the Republicans were more closely aligned with the interests of big business and the rich. Huey Long and the New Deal democrats did much to help the common man, including minorities. The fact that the relatively small number of powerful pro-segregation Democrats first tried to form their own party – the “Dixiecrats,” and then broke away from the Democratic party to join the Republicans over the issue of desegregation and civil rights is telling. Please see Strom Thurmond as an example.
You could ask the same question a different way, as well. Why is it that the Party of Lincoln is the party of Strom Thurmond and David Duke? How is it that the Republicans went from the Emancipation Proclamation to supporting racists in their bids for office and working against every piece of legislation which provided equality or benefited the African Americans in this country?
Answer by Tony C
Your first sentence is completely wrong. Lincoln did not free the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation, nor did he ever intend to. It was a political device designed solely to prevent Britain and France from recognising the Confederacy. The slaves were freed by Congress after the war in the 13th Amendment.

no and reads lincolns biograghy. History books do not tell you much about an individual person because there is a lot of History. You need to research Lincoln if you want to know more about him. He freed the slaves because slavery is inhuman
Tom is quite correct. Lincoln and The EP did not free a single slave. It specifically applied only to those states in rebellion, which the federal government had no control over at the time.
The EP also did not free any slaves of the thousands of slaves that were under federal control in the states of DE, MD, NJ, WV, MO,KY.
Still think the war was about slavery?
Nitwits! Lincoln Didn’t free the saves at all! Slavery ended a year after the war with the passage of the 13th amendment.—-But then again the war had so wrecked the economy that no one could afford to own slaves after wards–anyway.
Actually READ the Emancipation Proclamation (EP).—-It specifically EXEMPTS the Slave holding states of the North and those parts of the south occupied by the North. ‘The “States in Rebellion” the rest of the south, was The Confederate States of America (CSA) . The CSA was another country. Lincoln was president of the USA NOT the CSA—–he had no authority.–Imagine an american President telling Canada or France what to do.—–So the EP was only a bogus war measure to make England reconsider recognizing the Confederacy–It had nothing to do with freeing slaves.
Sheesh! even most teachers don’t read it. Whoever says the EP freed the slaves is either ignorant or thinks YOU are— “pulling your chain” to manipulate you for political reasons.
i think that’s not true. i think Lincoln freed the slaves to have economical benefit. in northern cities had a lot of factories and industrialized. so they needed cheap and enormous workforce. one of strong workforce was black slave.however, there were not enough slaves in northern cities. BUT southern cities were prosper with cultivation of cotton which needs a lot of slaves. and also there are lots of slaves already. so for Lincoln, it is natural for Lincoln to free the slaves in order to attract voters.
Lincoln didn’t own any slaves. to be frank, he was to poor and he disliked slavery. He was quoted as saying he would keep slavery if it meant that the nation would stay untied. however once the south seceded and the US went to war, he did not free slaves right away. EH freed the slaves when the Us looked like it would win that way south would have to emancipate the salves once the CSA lost and reunited with the US . Also the Us army was low on recruits, and Lincoln was loosing popularity in the North and in his very liberal very anti slave party, The Republicans ( O.o ohhh yess the Republicans where liberal and Democrats where conservative up until the New Deal era of the 1930s, Lincoln was a liberal). hope this helped
It’s incorrect to say that the Civil War became an anti-slavery crusade in the north, the majority of people in the north were indifferent to slavery and the number of deserters jumped to the highest level of the entire war right after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The reason for this was that Union soldiers felt betrayed when the war was proclaimed to be a war against slavery, they thought it was about preserving the Union which it actually was. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to keep the European countries from entering the war on the side of the Confederates, it was a smart political move. As Classmate said, it was the 13th Amendment that freed the slaves and that was ratified after Lincoln was killed.
Preserving the Union meant keeping it together as one country rather than have the southern states start their own foreign nation, it’s a pretty simple notion really. That’s what Lincoln meant when he said “If I could preserve the union without freeing a single slave, I would do so”. That too seems pretty straight forward. It’s naive to think that most northerners gave any thought to slavery which is why even after the Civil War blacks were not treated well even in the north.
