What did American think of hitler in 1939?
What was AMERICAN PUBLIC OPINION of Fascism. Anti semeitism. around 1935?

President Roosevelt to ensured that Abraham Lincoln Brigade would not be considered for commissioning as officers in World War II or to have any type of positive distinction conferred upon them.

Answer by henry
American’s thought it was a terrible idea, but also that in general there was a superior race. they didn’t really care for jews that much but didn’t like the threat of another world power.

Answer by Shannon
That hitler WAS A EFFFFFFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING CRAZY ANIMAL. HAHAHAHAHAAH. =P oops i think this time. before probably he still ruled.

Answer by jed.exodus7
i dont know what they thought of the anti semitism, but from what i learned in school, many Americans admired Hitler, the Nazis and it’s economic policies. Germany was the only nation to recover rapidly from the depression in the 1930s and the Nazis social policies created many jobs and economic growth. But no one really knew about what the Nazis were doing behind the scenes until 1945, and Nazi propaganda in the 30s created a very idealistic image of Nazi Germany

Answer by llordlloyd
US public opinion was mostly negative, but more in a way that saw Hitler as amusing than dangerous.

Many Americans (and indeed Europeans) thought the Treaty of Versailles was unfair for blaming the Germans for the First World War, and Germany having suffered badly during the Depression, there was quite a lot of sympathy for the idea that Germany should be strong again.

While Hitler’s anti-Jewish attitudes were known, to a large extent this was seen as clever politics and populism, few thought there would be a serious attempt to kill them all (and indeed the oppression only became murderous after about 1938). Similarly, to American audiences Hitler’s militarism, uniforms and so on were sort of funny (for instance Charlie Chaplin lampooned Hitler in ‘The Little Dictator’), but people had to admire German technical achievement in aircraft, racing cars and the like. US movie companies mostly accepted the Nazi’s demands to sack Jewish staff in Germany, and companies like Disney and Ford were enthusiastic backers of the Nazis.

Most of all, Americans wanted to avoid being dragged into any European war after the horrors of the First World War.

It must be remembered that in the 1930s many people thought democracy was too weak and discredited by the Depression to survive. Many people thought, therefore, that the choice was between Communism and Fascism. Conservatives- the wealthy, religious and so on- were keen supporters of people like Hitler, Mussolini and General Franco because they would protect property and business.

Discusses the causes and events of the Spanish Civil War, focusing on the American volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, the key battles in which they were involved, and their reasons for joining in this early fight against fascism.

Why don’t Republicans volunteer for service in Iraq?
Over history Liberal Americans have volunteered to be a part of a number of causes. In WWI they drove ambulances and flew airplanes. During the Spanish Civil war they joined the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight faschism. Why don’t Republicans that believe in Iraq do the same?
You miss the point.. These are causes that liberals believed in. I am not talking about service men. I am talking about citizens going on their own. In the Bosnian war Bosnian Americans went on their own and fought. And try to not use an insult it really makes you look foolish.
Additionally those polls that are sited are amazingly innacurate. Soldiers do their job. They go where they are sent. They also don’t express their opinions until they leave. That said I wonder why out of some 60 Iraq war vets that ran for congress only two or three were Republicans.
REMEMBER I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT SOLDIERS. I AM TALKING ABOUT CITIZENS.
To my knowledge there is no army fighting in Iraq made of citizen Americans that believe in the cause. Read up on the Spanish Civil War and then answer the question.

Answer by m1a1mikegolf
They do.

What have _you_ ever done?

Answer by iqstrike
They think cheerleaders are players.

Answer by JennoftheJungle
Hmmmm, every person I know that’s enlisted and serving is Republican. So, that kinda makes you an idiot, huh? But, that shouldn’t come as a surprise to you.

Answer by nonalcoholic2
There are many Republicans that have joined the military. I for one, am a conservative. I was in the Army at Ft. Knox 7 days after graduation from high school!

Written with passion and intelligence, the letters of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in World War II express the raw idealism of anti-fascist soldiers who experienced the war in boot camps, cockpits, and foxholes, but never lost sight of the great global issues at stake.

When the United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, only one group of American soldiers had already confronted the fascist enemy on the battlefield: the U.S. veterans of the Lincoln Brigade, a volunteer army of about 2,800 men and women who had enlisted to defend the Spanish Republic from military rebels during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). They fought on the losing side.

After Pearl Harbor, Lincoln Brigade veterans enthusiastically joined the U.S. Army, welcoming this second chance to fight against fascism. However, the Lincoln recruits soon encountered suspicious military leaders who questioned their patriotism and denied them promotions and overseas assignments, foreshadowing the political persecution of the postwar Red Scare. African American veterans who fought in fully integrated units in Spain, faced second-class treatment in America’s Jim Crow army. Nevertheless, the Lincolns served with distinction in every theater of the war and won a disproportionate number of medals for courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

The 154 letters in this volume, selected from thousands held in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives at NYU’s Tamiment Library, provide a new and unique perspective on aspects of World War II.

Spanish Civil War?
How did the US government participate in the Spanish Civil war? And should they have actively participated?
What is The Abraham Lincoln Brigade? What did they do regarding to the war?
Thank you

Answer by HOPLITE2501
George Orwell(1984) fought in this war against Franco , I know of no official American involvement but it would have been a good cause to introduce democratic ideals .
Good luck !
:0)

Answer by Numbat
Almost to a man, Governments stayed away from the Spanish Civil War. The pre-war Spanish Government was left wing. Almost too far left wing. The Governments that were exceptions were notable. The Russians (Stalin) and the Germans (Hitler) and the Italians (Mussolini).

<http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/SPlincoln.htm>
as well
<http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/SPwasington.htm>
which was later merged with The Abraham Lincoln Brigade due to casualties.

Five brigades of international volunteers fought on behalf of the democratically elected Republican (or Loyalist) government. Most of the North American volunteers served in the unit known as the 15th brigade, which included the Abraham Lincoln battalion, the George Washington battalion and the (largely Canadian) Mackenzie-Papineau battalion. All told, about 2,800 Americans, 1,250 Canadians and 800 Cubans served in the International Brigades. Over 80 of the U.S. volunteers were African-American. In fact, the Lincoln Battalion was headed by Oliver Law, an African-American from Chicago, until he died in battle

Answer by brainstorm
It didn’t.
The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was a group of American volunteers who fought on the Republican side

Far more people have been exposed to the Lincoln legend through film than through any other means, including literature. In Abraham Lincoln: Twentieth Century Popular Portrayals, film historian Frank Thompson analyzes the most significant Lincoln films and plays of all time to reveal how their portrayals of him have formed Lincoln’s image in this century.

@George Clinton
That’s probably why the CLASSIC liberal North disliked Lincoln so much: he was for the conservative economic system england and other European nations had used since the 16th century.
@Mr Wolf
Party ideologies might change, but the Democratic and Republican party never completely switched. The Democrats have always been for a more regulated economy, whereas the Republicans have always been for a less regulated economy except for several presidents (Lincoln, Bush jr, Nixon).

Answer by George Clinton
Oh really?

Did you know that the people who left Europe and came here were seeking liberation, damn liberals?

Answer by ME
republicans were normal back then

Answer by Mr Wolf
What is your point?
Today’s Conservatives would have been considered Republican/small “c” conservatives by true Conservatives like William F. Buckley, Jr 30 years ago. Parties and ideologies change.

Answer by John
who cares, it is all about the views and the republicans had different views back then than they do now, not nearly the same, and if that doesn’t answer it how about this, the north is still a capitalist it never changed

What has kept historians and conspiracy theorists puzzled for years?

In this vividly dramatic account of the last hours of Abraham Lincoln’s life, the events that led up to the night of April 14, 1865, are related as never before. Following the motives, decisions, and actions of both Lincoln and his assassin, John Wilkes Booth, readers will encounter facts and theories rarely taught in any history class. Alan Axelrod’s gripping retelling of this national tragedy highlights the numerous details, coincidences, and oddities of the assassination plot. This kit includes a handsome portfolio reproduction of the items Lincoln had in his wallet at the time of his death as well as other artifacts from the period.

Why hasn’t Obama quoted the rest of Lincoln? He seems enamored with myth. Why not truth?
Could it be for the same reasons voters digress from issues to emotion?

Let Obama tackle things we real Americans must. Why not start with who wrote “Amazing Grace” and the story behind its lyrics?

Or, how about quotes that actually defined Lincoln before his death, like:

“I will say, then, that I am not,
– - nor have ever been,
– - in favor of bringing about
– - – in anyway
– - the social and political equality
– - of the white and black races
– that I am not, nor have ever been,
– - in favor of making voters or jurors of n**roes,
– - nor of qualifying them
– - – to hold office,
– - – nor to intermarry with white people;
– - – and I will say in addition to this that
– - – - there is a physical difference between the white and black races…
– - – I, as much as any other man,
– - – am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

– Abraham Lincoln

and…

“I have never said any thing to the contrary, but I hold that notwithstanding all this, there is no reason in the world why the n**ro is not entitled to all the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence—the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I hold that he is as much entitled to these as the white man. I agree with Judge Douglas that he is not my equal in many respects, certainly not in color—perhaps not in intellectual and moral endowments; but in the right to eat the bread without the leave of any body else which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every other man.”

– Abraham Lincoln

These things rarely come to light, now, despite similar expressions of ignorance held by most people of the time, regardless of background, race, ethnicity and education.

So, then, why?

…
= = = = = = = =

Real…Lib…Bias: Nice try but these are direct quotes that history seems determined to ignore. We ignore facts of history to our own detriment. How can we learn from the mistakes of history if we refuse to see it plainly?

Steve G: My family moved to IL from KY at the same time the Lincolns did. I certainly know of the air-brushed image historians cling to. But no American should stop asking why he resorted to war despite numerous successful cases of nations ending slavery without firing a shot?

why is abraham lincoln in the penny?
i think this must be a mistake because i think that abraham is one of the most important presidents in america. he abolished slavery and succesfully won the war..i think he should be put on at least a 50 dollar bill or more..who came up with the idea of putting him in the penny..he is worth much more…

Answer by why hello there
He’s also on the five.

Answer by staisil
When the Lincoln one-cent coin made its initial appearance in 1909, it marked a radical departure from the accepted styling of United States coins, introducing as it did for the first time a portrait coin in the regular series. A strong feeling had prevailed against using portraits on our coins, but public sentiment stemming from the 100th anniversary celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birth proved stronger than the long-standing prejudice

Answer by *I <3 James Franco;*
Because he was on one of those bidding for guys thing.
and no one bid any money on him cuz he’s ugly..
so I had to buy him for 1 cent.
=]
I’m so nice right.

Answer by JASON P
Lincoln did not abolish slavery, he was dead thanks to John Wilkes Booth before slavery was abolished.

Is Abraham Lincoln on the penny cause he ended slavery?

Answer by Lalex
He didn’t personally end slavery; emancipation was just a byproduct of the War of Northern Aggression which was fought for money and power, as all wars are. Lincoln actually exempted slaves in states not in rebellion from the proclamation.

I don’t think the type of coin has any significance; he’s also on the five dollar bill. We tend to stick presidents on money, regular or special issue (like the Kennedy half dollar); hence the term “dead presidents” to refer to money.

Answer by dreamprotector 09
No, only partially correct, He is there because he was one of the best Presidents ever. He did sign the Emancipation Proclamation. He was monumental in his writings and speeches, the victory over the South in the Civil War, preventing the destruction of the Union. Most polls by historians list him in the top three to the top five. The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. is awe-inspiring.
There are a number of Presidents on the bills and coinage.

Answer by staisil
The likeness of President Lincoln on the penny is an adaption of a plaque executed by Victor David Brenner, an outstanding portraitist and sculptor. President Theodore Roosevelt was so impressed with Mr. Brenner’s design of a Lincoln plaque that he recommended to the Secretary of the Treasury that the design be placed on a coin to be issued in the Lincoln Centennial Year, 1909.

Answer by two11ll
It was actually a pun gone awry. When the US Treasury put him on the penny, they were trying to say that everyone should have the sense (cents) of Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln faces to the right on a penny while all the other presidents face to the left on US coins..?
Have you ever bothered to notice?

Answer by Ernest
Nope coz i see the queens face on our coins

Answer by socks&sunglasses<3
uhhh no

Answer by poofrog
nope

Answer by HeartBreaker
Yeah, i’ve noticed that.

I think it’s because he was kinda a big deal.

Lol idk…

What is this poem saying about abraham Lincoln?
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather’d every rack,
the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up- for you the flag is flung- for
you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths- for you the shores
a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Answer by jayleites
Captain: the war is over. We won, but you’re dead.

Answer by DEFHALEN1
Basically it is saying that Abraham Lincoln succeeded in what he was put here to do while he was still alive.

He had completed his mission. He kept the Union together before he was murdered.

The ship that is anchored safe and sound is the Union that he guided through the Civil War. The “object won” is a the unified country.

The fallen cold and dead parts are self-explanatory.

That’s the basics from just a quick reading of the poem.

Answer by EМ♥♥JAY
I think it’s saying that the slaves have been freed, the war is over, but now the captain of the nation is dead

Answer by icampbell921
articles of confederation i think

Answer by Chloe G
Declaration of Independence. Which, by the way, was written in, like, two weeks.

Answer by Randy
As with any president beginning with Washington and all since, it is the Constitution of the United States.

This is the singular document which establishes a nation.

The Declaration of Independence performs as it states, declares independence which at the time applied to the States individually.

The Articles of Confederation was a ‘confederation’ of individual States not a nation. This can be seen in the ’1783 Treaty of Peace’ as declared in Article One where each State is individually identified and declared as Free, Independent and Sovereign.

It wasn’t until the Constitution of the United States was ratified that a nation with an actual general government existed. Even here it was not a ‘fully’ sovereign general government until the end of the Civil War and the enacting of the 14th Amendment in 1868 which was validated in 1869 in the case of Texas v. White.

I’m related to Abraham Lincoln, but I need somewhere i can get proof.?
I know I’m related to Abraham Lincoln somehow, but all documents and proof have been lost. My great great grandmother, Claire Melinda Lincoln (later married John Crissman), was Abraham Lincoln’s 2nd or third cousin. My great grandfather had researched the family ties and had documents, but everything disappeared after his death. Is there anywhere where I can find information for free, or does anybody have information on this. My family has also tried contacting the Lincoln family, but they have never responded.

Answer by Max
you just did prove it

Answer by GrayPict
You can do the research and maintain the documentation and cite the sources used to determine the relationship. Start with yourself and trace back one generation at a time. Very few Family associations would provide your documentation even it they had it. These Societies believe that if you want to be a member, you will do the research and provide the proof that they require for membership.
Genealogy is the study of direct bloodline relations, the one you describe would be considered a very distant relationship and usually not one that would be accepted as a relative that would be accepted for membership in a family society.

Answer by Ted Pack
RWWC,

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

has this entry

Clara Malinda LINCOLN
Birth: 9 MAR 1862 in Decatur,Illinois
Death: 10 DEC 1946 in Moberly, Randolph Cty, Missouri
Burial: Brunswick, Chariton Cty, Missouri

Marriage John Quitman CRISSMAN b: 18 MAY 1856 in Bedford Cty,Pennsylvania

If that is who you mean, you could write to him and see if he had heard of the connection.

Be warned,

1) Any family with a maiden name the same as a president has a legend of being related to same.

2) Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809.
His parents were born roughly 30 years before then, grandparents 60, great grandparents 90.

Second cousins share great grandparents, so you’d have to find birth or christening records for people whose parents were born in 1719 to prove a second cousin. That isn’t impossible, but it is a lot harder than trying to find an obituary of someone who died in 1943.

Answer by Nothingusefullearnedinschool
If you “know” you are related, then you have your proof. As famous as Lincoln was, just go to any Lincoln genealogy site and follow all of the paths until you get to you. You can start with googling “lincoln genealogy” (he was part black, you know) or go to cyndislist.com to find other sources.

PLEASE HELP!!!
thanx

P.S.- HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer by Stella C
Elizabeth Cady Stanton(1815-1902) is believed to be the driving force behind the 1848 Convention, and for the next fifty years played a leadership role in the women’s rights movement. Somewhat overshadowed in popular memory by her long time colleague Susan B. Anthony, Stanton was for many years the architect and author of the movement’s most important strategies and documents. Though she became increasingly estranged from the mainstream of the movement, particularly near the end of her career, she maintained to the end her long time friendship with Anthony.

Patrick Henry (May 29, 1736 – June 6, 1799)[1] was a prominent figure in the American Revolution, known and remembered for his “Give me Liberty, or give me Death!” speech. Along with Samuel Adams and Thomas Paine, he was one of the most influential (and radical) advocates of the American Revolution and republicanism, especially in his denunciations of corruption in government officials and his defense of historic rights.

Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875) was the seventeenth President of the United States (1865–1869), succeeding to the Presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Johnson was a U.S. Senator from Greeneville, Tennessee, at the time of the secession of the Southern states. He was the only southern Senator not to quit his post upon secession, and became the most prominent War Democrat from the South. In 1862 Lincoln appointed Johnson military governor of Tennessee, where he proved energetic and effective in fighting the rebellion.[2]

Johnson was nominated for the Vice President slot in 1864 on the National Union Party ticket. He and Lincoln were elected in November 1864, and Johnson became president upon Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865.

As president he took charge of Presidential Reconstruction — the first phase of Reconstruction — which lasted until the Radical Republicans gained control of Congress in the 1866 elections. His conciliatory policies towards the South, his hurry to reincorporate the former Confederates back into the union, and his vetoes of civil rights bills embroiled him in a bitter dispute with the Radical Republicans.[3] The Radicals in the House of Representatives impeached him in 1868, but he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate. He was the first U.S. President to be impeached

Although he was Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s oldest and last surviving son, the details of Robert T. Lincoln’s life are misunderstood by some and unknown to many others. Nearly half a century after the last biography about Abraham Lincoln’s son was published, historian and author Jason Emerson illuminates the life of this remarkable man and his achievements in Giant in the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln. Emerson, after nearly ten years of research, draws upon previously unavailable materials to offer the first truly definitive biography of the famous lawyer, businessman, and statesman who, much more than merely the son of America’s most famous president, made his own indelible mark on one of the most progressive and dynamic eras in United States history.

Born in a boardinghouse but passing his last days at ease on a lavish country estate, Robert Lincoln played many roles during his lifetime. As a president’s son, a Union soldier, an ambassador to Great Britain, and a U.S. secretary of war, Lincoln was indisputably a titan of his age. Much like his father, he became one of the nation’s most respected and influential men, building a successful law practice in the city of Chicago, serving shrewdly as president of the Pullman Car Company, and at one time even being considered as a candidate for the U.S. presidency.

Along the way he bore witness to some of the most dramatic moments in America’s history, including Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; the advent of the railroad, telephone, electrical, and automobile industries; the circumstances surrounding the assassinations of three presidents of the United States; and the momentous presidential election of 1912. Giant in the Shadows also reveals Robert T. Lincoln’s complex relationships with his famous parents and includes previously unpublished insights into their personalities. Emerson reveals new details about Robert’s role as his father’s confidant during the brutal years of the Civil War and his reaction to his father’s murder; his prosecution of the thieves who attempted to steal his father’s body in 1876 and the extraordinary measures he took to ensure it would never happen again; as well as details about the painful decision to have his mother committed to a mental facility. In addition Emerson explores the relationship between Robert and his children, and exposes the actual story of his stewardship of the Lincoln legacy—including what he and his wife really destroyed and what was preserved. Emerson also delves into the true reason Robert is not buried in the Lincoln tomb in Springfield but instead was interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Meticulously researched, full of never-before-seen photographs and new insight into historical events, Giant in the Shadows is the missing chapter of the Lincoln family story. Emerson’s riveting work is more than simply a biography; it is a tale of American achievement in the Gilded Age and the endurance of the Lincoln legacy.

How come people never get possesed by Angels?
We just finished watching The Exorsist of Emily Rose and it dawned on me how rediculous it is to believe in demonic possession when it can all be explained by Psychology.

My mother worked at a the state Mental institution and worked with Abraham Lincoln and Jesus every day. She would come home and tell me stories of how Jesus was upset and smote a nurse because she gave him milk instead of O.J. This is in the same realm of Psychology and not far off from a demonic possesion.

So my question is to you how come people never claim to be possesed by angels? And what is your thoughts?

Answer by lilahfairy
weird movie eh

Answer by JewishGirl
because then they would have to answer questions about G-d since they had an insider’s view that nobody can answer. but anybody with a good imagination can fake demonic posession, there is so much mythology about hell.

Answer by whynotaskdon
“”How come people never get possesed by Angels?”"

THEY DO!

FALLEN Angels– they are called DEMONS!

(True Christians can not be possessed.)

Answer by Elphaba
Because they’d rather play victims than step up to be the leader of good.

Agree or disagree with the following? Is George Bush is to blame for everything that happens in the world?
He strapped 50,000 tons of dynamite to his back and parachuted into New Orleans and blew up the levees. He personally destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, started the Civil War because Abraham Lincoln wanted to free black people. He also started the War of the Roses, and is now training alligators in Florida to attack black people. It is his desire to end the world. I know for a fact that on June 28, 2008, at precisely 22:00:00 Bush is going to launch a nuclear attack on San Francisco, in the hopes that California will finally vote for a Republican President. After that, he will retire to his ranch in Texas, where he will finally meet with Cindy Sheehan, and she will conceive his love child. When he finally dies, he will join Louie Farrakan and Elijah Mohommed in their spaceship that is circling the earth.
Ha Ha Charade You Are…I missed that. Hmmm…CNN, CBS, and ABC are falling down on the job…GREAT POINT.

Answer by Veto R
1) He followed the war by telegraph, the first President to do so. Many Northern generals felt his use of the telegraph and his constant contact with them was an inappropriate interference with their commands.
2) His war cabinet included his two opponents in the Republican Presidential nominating process. He wanted the best minds for his cabinet. And, he included a Southern Democrat — Andrew Johnson from Tennessee — on his second ticket as a way to heal the nation from a war he thought was nearing its conclusion.
3) He offered command of the Union Army to Robert E. Lee before Lee resigned his commission.
4) He suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the war and imprisoned many Southern sympathizers in the North.
5) He ordered a blockade of Southern ports.

Answer by armouror
Pick one of these they are all true and factual

He waged a war that cost the lives of 620,000 Americans. Including the murder of 50,000 innocent Southern civilians.

He illegally shut down and confiscated the printing presses of dozens of newspapers that had spoken out against him.

He re-instated and summarily promoted an Army officer who had been court marshaled and cashiered by the US Army for war crimes.

He illegally deported a member of Congress after said congressman criticized his unconstitutional behaviour.

He even had an arrest warrant issued for the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court because said justice refused to back his illegal actions.

Chief Justice Roger B Taney ruled that Lincolns actions were illegal, criminal and unconstitutional.

Lincoln locked up Maryland legislators to prevent them from voting to secede from the Union, that’s kidnapping.

He invaded the South without the consent of Congress as required by the Constitution, that’s a war crime.

He blockaded Southern ports without a Declaration of war, as required by the Constitution, that’s another war crime.

He created three new states without the consent of the citizens of those states in order to artificially inflate the Republican Party’s electoral vote.

He ordered Federal troops to interfere with Northern elections to assure his Party’s victories.

He confiscated private property, including firearms, in violation of the Second Amendment; and effectively gutted the Tenth and Ninth Amendments as well.

In this highly praised examination of Lincoln and his times, Albert Marrin shows how a principled but imperfect man-brilliant and determined but also cautious and prejudiced-grew under the pressure of personal tragedy and national crisis to become our greatest president. A beautifully researched, riveting account of Lincoln and the Civil War period, Commander in Chief was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Booklist Editors’ Choice.

this inst a question just some pure facts civil war read or die?
Grant had slaves until the 13th amendment. Lee set his slaves free before the war. Abraham Lincoln actually did very little if anything for the right of slaves. as most educated persons might know the acclamation proclamation did nothing as the south had its own government at the time it came out and it failed to free slaves in the north. Grant graduated from west point 1843, ranking 21st in a class of 39. Lee graduated in 1825 and became the first cadet to achieve the rank of sergeant at the end of his first year. When he graduated in 1829 he was at the head of his class in artillery and tactics, and shared the distinction with five other cadets of having received no demerits during the four-year course of instruction. Overall, he ranked second in his class of 46. stonewall Jackson graduated 17th out of 59 students in the Class of 1846. It was said by his peers that if he had stayed there another year, he would have graduated first. neither wanted secession Lincoln wanted offered Lee the position of the union army but he turned it down because he decided to go with his state.

Nobody wanted the war but to say it was over slaver it besmirches the names of the countless dead black and white. that fought honorably for the south in the civil war.

I don’t deny that slavery might have been the reason some people joined the war. just as there are troops in Iraq that joined to kill some Arabs

as stonewall might tell you because i know he will read this in Texas there are plenty of blacks that have the confederate flag tattooed on them i know of some that bang johnny rebel as loud as they can. and in my observation of human nature the only ppl that consider the flag or our heritage as racist are usually the uneducated and juvenile kids

i wont delete your answer no matter how ignorant they are calling me a racist and what not but i ask you why am i a racist because i have pride for my heritage and i know my facts and i am not spoon fed my own beliefs do you condemn Germans as racists because of Hitler.

i will leave you with this quotes from Abraham lincolin

“I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position. I have never said anything to the contrary.” ~ Lincoln, Aug. 21, 1858, in remarks stating his belief that blacks were naturally inferior to whites, which was a nearly universal belief on the part of whites in both the North and South long before and long after the Civil War.

“I cannot make it better known than it already is, that I favor colonization.” ~ Lincoln, in a message to Congress, December 1, 1862, supporting deportation of all blacks from America.

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union.” ~ Letter to Horace Greeley, Editor of the New York Tribune, August 22 1862. This more than anything else demonstrates that Lincoln’s centralist superstitions derived from Daniel Webster and Joseph Story about “the Union,” rather than the immorality of slavery, were his motivations in plotting war. This letter also contradicts Lincoln’s sentiment expressed in his first inaugural address, that he had neither the “lawful right,” or the “inclination” to abolish slavery.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN was republican intact if you believe he was the savior of the slave

Answer by jhdh2008
Too many uneducated children think that the South was the only country that ever had slaves. THey exist today in Cartels, in Asian brothels. They even are addressed in the Bible. Even to the point of telling how they should be treated.
On holidays in Rome, slaves were freed. So it is not a S versus N deal.
I am glad that others out there know this.

Answer by Nate
This is the third incoherent rant I have read from you on this subject in the last twenty minutes. I am beginning to think you are obsessed! Go outside and get some fresh air!

The Civil War was not based on slavery. Five Northern states (KY, MO, MD, DE, WV) allowed slavery. To say it was is a gross oversimplification. However, to deny that slavery played a part is pure idiocy. Slavery inflamed sectional tensions to the point where the election of a Republican president caused 11 states to renounce their bonds with the Union.

Go ahead and have “pride in your heritage.” But take pride in your heritage as an American, not a descendent of the largest act of treason in American history.

Answer by Joshua
I agree with a lot of it. While I don’t really care who has what tattoo your historical facts are very true.

Answer by ammianus
During the American Civil War, the Confederacy was basically (and knowingly) fighting to preserve slavery in their states as an institution – no matter how much at the time (and pro Confederacy historians since) it has been dressed up as states’ rights

Family Tree?
How do you like find out your family tree. Like so you can see what famous ancestor you may have. My teacher traced his and on his mom’s side he is related to Abraham Lincoln.

Answer by heart.chocolatte
That’s so cool, I’d love to know who my ancestors were!

Answer by Ted Pack
This is a text file I paste to questions like yours. People ask similar questions 3 – 14 times a day here. You get a long, detailed answer, I don’t get finger cramps. It is long because there are over 400,000 free genealogy sites.

It is also long because researching your family tree is as hard as writing a term paper in a History class. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist, but you won’t do it with five clicks. I could tell you everything I know in 30 minutes, but not 3. The fact you have to do research stops nine out of ten teens and many adults.

If you didn’t mention a country, we can’t tell if you are in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia. I’m in the USA and my links are for it. If you are not, please edit your question to add a country. Genealogists from the UK answer posts here too. They are more experienced and more intelligent than I am. I’m better looking and my jokes are better.

The really good stuff is in your parents’ and grandparents’ memories. No web site is going to tell you how your great grandparents decorated the Christmas tree with ornaments cut from tin foil during the depression, how Great Uncle Elmer wooed his wife with a banjo, or how Uncle John paid his way through college in the 1960′s by smuggling herbs. Talk to your living relatives before it is too late.

You won’t find living people on genealogy sites. Don’t look for yourself or your parents.

So much for the warnings. Here are some links. These are large and free. Many of them have subtle ads for Ancestry.com in them – ads that ask for a name, then offer a trial subscription. Watch out for those advertisements.

They welcome anyone interested in genealogy, not just fellow Mormons. They have resources on CD’s and volunteers who are friendly. They don’t try to convert you; in fact, they don’t mention their religion unless you ask a question about it.

The Danger Zone is a candid discussion relative to the dangerous times for everyone, especially church leaders. The Danger Zone is a handbook for those who want to see reformation in these critical times through repentance and restoration, in that specific order. Christian, you are called to “live as if the power of Christ reigns in you. You will never regret it. It will take you out of the Danger Zone!”

im related to Abraham lincoln? Out of wedlock or somthing???? Help?!?
All my life my great grandma who told my mom (my dad is related to him not my mom) that we were but she died after a few years and during that time we moved out of state so we didn’t really ask but it has been bugging me.
my uncle says he thinks it was lincoln’s maids baby that we are related to..did he have a kid out of wed-lock? i really want to know so if someone has a family tree i would much appreciate it!!

Answer by Babs
Lincoln has had several biographers and there has been no mention of any illegitimate children. It must be some fairy tale nonsense that has gotten passed down. Don’t think there’s any truth to it.

Answer by bigsis1197
There is a fascinating book entitled “The Last Lincolns” by Charles Lachman.
Lincoln’s only surviving son Robert Todd Lincoln had 3 children–2 girls, one boy. Their children were the last of the Lincoln line. There is no mention of Abe or any of his descendents leaving behind any illegitmate children. And there certainly would have been knowledge of it because of desire by Lincoln political enemies to blacken the name.
As far as the maid goes, there were probably dozens who served the Lincolns over time. You’ll just have to start your own geneology search. There are plenty of sites that can help you get started.
Good luck!

Is Obama way behind the curve in the Abraham Lincoln style destruction of habeas corpus?
Abraham Lincoln destroyed habeas corpus on his own. Obama is just following George Bush.

Answer by Katy’s little sister
Lol

Answer by Mr. Magoo
If Lincoln destroyed habeas corpus, then since it would already have been destroyed, Bush could not have destroyed it again and Obama could not be in the process of destroying it yet again. You have been watching too many vampire shows.

Answer by DukeofDixie
We will see early next year, when Obama starts his Domestic Security Crisis, saying g he cannot trust the right wing extremists in the military or the Secret Service ( uninvited quests at the White House) he will request Congress to give him the funding for his private army ( National Civilian Security Force), after this is granted , we will see if the suspends the Writ of Habeas Corpus and possibility a Confiscation Act , like Lincoln in 1861 and 1862, but first he will need to stage a few riots ( Acorn) and call it a revolt, so the Constitution will allow him to become a dictator, then Marshall Law and the suspension of all elections until peace is restored and that will never happen while he remains in the White House, the media will of course go along with this , as he shuts down Fox and talk radio *********************************************************************************************

Answer by sam h
Ha ha, this is good. Obama is paving his own trail. He is making his own marks. Sadly, he is making them on our wallets.

Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln?
Has anyone thought about the similarities between Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama i.e, years of experience, position in the senate, etc. ?

Answer by Junior
Barack Obama in no more an Abraham Lincoln than Dan Quayle was a JFK….it ain’t apples to apples lady…..

Poor Obama supporters get so upset when you don’t agree…5 thumbs down for an accurate observation…I hope you folks really aren’t of voting age…

Answer by rumbler_12
Good point, excellent point!

Very very similar men!

Answer by jfinancialz
Obama cited this in his Feb 2007 speech in which he entered the Pres race. Obama stands for hope and change, and he clearly, like Lincoln, has a lot to offer.
