i dont know what they thought of the anti semitism, but from what i learned in school, many Americans admired Hitler, the Nazis and it’s economic policies. Germany was the only nation to recover rapidly from the depression in the 1930s and the Nazis social policies created many jobs and economic growth. But no one really knew about what the Nazis were doing behind the scenes until 1945, and Nazi propaganda in the 30s created a very idealistic image of Nazi Germany

US public opinion was mostly negative, but more in a way that saw Hitler as amusing than dangerous.

Many Americans (and indeed Europeans) thought the Treaty of Versailles was unfair for blaming the Germans for the First World War, and Germany having suffered badly during the Depression, there was quite a lot of sympathy for the idea that Germany should be strong again.

While Hitler’s anti-Jewish attitudes were known, to a large extent this was seen as clever politics and populism, few thought there would be a serious attempt to kill them all (and indeed the oppression only became murderous after about 1938). Similarly, to American audiences Hitler’s militarism, uniforms and so on were sort of funny (for instance Charlie Chaplin lampooned Hitler in ‘The Little Dictator’), but people had to admire German technical achievement in aircraft, racing cars and the like. US movie companies mostly accepted the Nazi’s demands to sack Jewish staff in Germany, and companies like Disney and Ford were enthusiastic backers of the Nazis.

Most of all, Americans wanted to avoid being dragged into any European war after the horrors of the First World War.

It must be remembered that in the 1930s many people thought democracy was too weak and discredited by the Depression to survive. Many people thought, therefore, that the choice was between Communism and Fascism. Conservatives- the wealthy, religious and so on- were keen supporters of people like Hitler, Mussolini and General Franco because they would protect property and business.

Why don’t Republicans volunteer for service in Iraq?
Over history Liberal Americans have volunteered to be a part of a number of causes. In WWI they drove ambulances and flew airplanes. During the Spanish Civil war they joined the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight faschism. Why don’t Republicans that believe in Iraq do the same?
You miss the point.. These are causes that liberals believed in. I am not talking about service men. I am talking about citizens going on their own. In the Bosnian war Bosnian Americans went on their own and fought. And try to not use an insult it really makes you look foolish.
Additionally those polls that are sited are amazingly innacurate. Soldiers do their job. They go where they are sent. They also don’t express their opinions until they leave. That said I wonder why out of some 60 Iraq war vets that ran for congress only two or three were Republicans.
REMEMBER I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT SOLDIERS. I AM TALKING ABOUT CITIZENS.

Almost to a man, Governments stayed away from the Spanish Civil War. The pre-war Spanish Government was left wing. Almost too far left wing. The Governments that were exceptions were notable. The Russians (Stalin) and the Germans (Hitler) and the Italians (Mussolini).

Are you serious? Motion pictures were not around when Lincoln was alive. They had photography, but no motion pictures. When motion pictures were first invented around the turn of the century, they didnt even have sound. “Talkies” didnt show up until the late 1920′s.

You would look at the mitochondrial DNA sequence of Lincoln. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed through the mother, so it is the best way to look at maternal ancestry.

Conversely, if you wanted paternal inheritance you would do Y chromosome sequencing since Y chromosomes are only passed from father to son. Only downside is that women don’t have Y chromosome so to get paternal inheritance you would have to get a brother’s DNA.

He didn’t personally end slavery; emancipation was just a byproduct of the War of Northern Aggression which was fought for money and power, as all wars are. Lincoln actually exempted slaves in states not in rebellion from the proclamation.

I don’t think the type of coin has any significance; he’s also on the five dollar bill. We tend to stick presidents on money, regular or special issue (like the Kennedy half dollar); hence the term “dead presidents” to refer to money.

No, only partially correct, He is there because he was one of the best Presidents ever. He did sign the Emancipation Proclamation. He was monumental in his writings and speeches, the victory over the South in the Civil War, preventing the destruction of the Union. Most polls by historians list him in the top three to the top five. The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. is awe-inspiring.

He had completed his mission. He kept the Union together before he was murdered.

The ship that is anchored safe and sound is the Union that he guided through the Civil War. The “object won” is a the unified country.

I’m related to Abraham Lincoln, but I need somewhere i can get proof.?
I know I’m related to Abraham Lincoln somehow, but all documents and proof have been lost. My great great grandmother, Claire Melinda Lincoln (later married John Crissman), was Abraham Lincoln’s 2nd or third cousin. My great grandfather had researched the family ties and had documents, but everything disappeared after his death. Is there anywhere where I can find information for free, or does anybody have information on this. My family has also tried contacting the Lincoln family, but they have never responded.

You can do the research and maintain the documentation and cite the sources used to determine the relationship. Start with yourself and trace back one generation at a time. Very few Family associations would provide your documentation even it they had it. These Societies believe that if you want to be a member, you will do the research and provide the proof that they require for membership.
Genealogy is the study of direct bloodline relations, the one you describe would be considered a very distant relationship and usually not one that would be accepted as a relative that would be accepted for membership in a family society.

Be warned,

1) Any family with a maiden name the same as a president has a legend of being related to same.

2) Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809.
His parents were born roughly 30 years before then, grandparents 60, great grandparents 90.

Second cousins share great grandparents, so you’d have to find birth or christening records for people whose parents were born in 1719 to prove a second cousin. That isn’t impossible, but it is a lot harder than trying to find an obituary of someone who died in 1943.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton(1815-1902) is believed to be the driving force behind the 1848 Convention, and for the next fifty years played a leadership role in the women’s rights movement. Somewhat overshadowed in popular memory by her long time colleague Susan B. Anthony, Stanton was for many years the architect and author of the movement’s most important strategies and documents. Though she became increasingly estranged from the mainstream of the movement, particularly near the end of her career, she maintained to the end her long time friendship with Anthony.

Patrick Henry (May 29, 1736 – June 6, 1799)[1] was a prominent figure in the American Revolution, known and remembered for his “Give me Liberty, or give me Death!” speech. Along with Samuel Adams and Thomas Paine, he was one of the most influential (and radical) advocates of the American Revolution and republicanism, especially in his denunciations of corruption in government officials and his defense of historic rights.

Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875) was the seventeenth President of the United States (1865–1869), succeeding to the Presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Johnson was a U.S. Senator from Greeneville, Tennessee, at the time of the secession of the Southern states. He was the only southern Senator not to quit his post upon secession, and became the most prominent War Democrat from the South. In 1862 Lincoln appointed Johnson military governor of Tennessee, where he proved energetic and effective in fighting the rebellion.[2]

Johnson was nominated for the Vice President slot in 1864 on the National Union Party ticket. He and Lincoln were elected in November 1864, and Johnson became president upon Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865.

As president he took charge of Presidential Reconstruction — the first phase of Reconstruction — which lasted until the Radical Republicans gained control of Congress in the 1866 elections. His conciliatory policies towards the South, his hurry to reincorporate the former Confederates back into the union, and his vetoes of civil rights bills embroiled him in a bitter dispute with the Radical Republicans.[3] The Radicals in the House of Representatives impeached him in 1868, but he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate. He was the first U.S. President to be impeached

How come people never get possesed by Angels?
We just finished watching The Exorsist of Emily Rose and it dawned on me how rediculous it is to believe in demonic possession when it can all be explained by Psychology.

My mother worked at a the state Mental institution and worked with Abraham Lincoln and Jesus every day. She would come home and tell me stories of how Jesus was upset and smote a nurse because she gave him milk instead of O.J. This is in the same realm of Psychology and not far off from a demonic possesion.

So my question is to you how come people never claim to be possesed by angels? And what is your thoughts?

1) He followed the war by telegraph, the first President to do so. Many Northern generals felt his use of the telegraph and his constant contact with them was an inappropriate interference with their commands.
2) His war cabinet included his two opponents in the Republican Presidential nominating process. He wanted the best minds for his cabinet. And, he included a Southern Democrat — Andrew Johnson from Tennessee — on his second ticket as a way to heal the nation from a war he thought was nearing its conclusion.
3) He offered command of the Union Army to Robert E. Lee before Lee resigned his commission.

Grant had slaves until the 13th amendment. Lee set his slaves free before the war. Abraham Lincoln actually did very little if anything for the right of slaves. as most educated persons might know the acclamation proclamation did nothing as the south had its own government at the time it came out and it failed to free slaves in the north. Grant graduated from west point 1843, ranking 21st in a class of 39. Lee graduated in 1825 and became the first cadet to achieve the rank of sergeant at the end of his first year. When he graduated in 1829 he was at the head of his class in artillery and tactics, and shared the distinction with five other cadets of having received no demerits during the four-year course of instruction. Overall, he ranked second in his class of 46. stonewall Jackson graduated 17th out of 59 students in the Class of 1846. It was said by his peers that if he had stayed there another year, he would have graduated first. neither wanted secession Lincoln wanted offered Lee the position of the union army but he turned it down because he decided to go with his state.

Nobody wanted the war but to say it was over slaver it besmirches the names of the countless dead black and white. that fought honorably for the south in the civil war.

Too many uneducated children think that the South was the only country that ever had slaves. THey exist today in Cartels, in Asian brothels. They even are addressed in the Bible. Even to the point of telling how they should be treated.
On holidays in Rome, slaves were freed. So it is not a S versus N deal.

The Civil War was not based on slavery. Five Northern states (KY, MO, MD, DE, WV) allowed slavery. To say it was is a gross oversimplification. However, to deny that slavery played a part is pure idiocy. Slavery inflamed sectional tensions to the point where the election of a Republican president caused 11 states to renounce their bonds with the Union.

Go ahead and have “pride in your heritage.” But take pride in your heritage as an American, not a descendent of the largest act of treason in American history.

During the American Civil War, the Confederacy was basically (and knowingly) fighting to preserve slavery in their states as an institution – no matter how much at the time (and pro Confederacy historians since) it has been dressed up as states’ rights

Off the Internet, some public libraries have census image subscriptions. Many Family History Centers do too. FHC’s are small rooms in Mormon churches. They welcome anyone interested in genealogy, not just fellow Mormons. They have resources on CD’s and volunteers who are friendly. They don’t try to convert you; in fact, they don’t mention their religion unless you ask a question about it.

All my life my great grandma who told my mom (my dad is related to him not my mom) that we were but she died after a few years and during that time we moved out of state so we didn’t really ask but it has been bugging me.

Lincoln has had several biographers and there has been no mention of any illegitimate children. It must be some fairy tale nonsense that has gotten passed down. Don’t think there’s any truth to it.

There is a fascinating book entitled “The Last Lincolns” by Charles Lachman.
Lincoln’s only surviving son Robert Todd Lincoln had 3 children–2 girls, one boy. Their children were the last of the Lincoln line. There is no mention of Abe or any of his descendents leaving behind any illegitmate children. And there certainly would have been knowledge of it because of desire by Lincoln political enemies to blacken the name.
As far as the maid goes, there were probably dozens who served the Lincolns over time. You’ll just have to start your own geneology search. There are plenty of sites that can help you get started.

We will see early next year, when Obama starts his Domestic Security Crisis,saying g he cannot trust the right wing extremists in the military or the Secret Service ( uninvited quests at the White House) he will request Congress to give him the funding for his private army ( National Civilian Security Force), after this is granted , we will see if the suspends the Writ of Habeas Corpus and possibility a Confiscation Act , like Lincoln in 1861 and 1862, but first he will need to stage a few riots ( Acorn) and call it a revolt, so the Constitution will allow him to become a dictator, then Marshall Law and the suspension of all elections until peace is restored and that will never happen while he remains in the White House, the media will of course go along with this , as he shuts down Fox and talk radio *********************************************************************************************
