Abraham Lincoln: A Life

311AyKuvvTL. SL160 Does anyone know what an 1865 edition of the book Abraham Lincoln His Life and Public Services is worth?

In the first multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America’s greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers, along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce current understanding of America’s sixteenth president.

Volume 1 covers Lincoln’s early childhood, his experiences as a farm boy in Indiana and Illinois, his legal training, and the political ambition that led to a term in Congress in the 1840s. In volume 2, Burlingame examines Lincoln’s life during his presidency and the Civil War, narrating in fascinating detail the crisis over Fort Sumter and Lincoln’s own battles with relentless office seekers, hostile newspaper editors, and incompetent field commanders. Burlingame also offers new interpretations of Lincoln’s private life, discussing his marriage to Mary Todd and the untimely deaths of two sons to disease.

But through it all—his difficult childhood, his contentious political career, a fratricidal war, and tragic personal losses—Lincoln preserved a keen sense of humor and acquired a psychological maturity that proved to be the North’s most valuable asset in winning the Civil War.

Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, this landmark publication establishes Burlingame as the most assiduous Lincoln biographer of recent memory and brings Lincoln alive to modern readers as never before.

What were some of the major triumphs and tragedies in Abraham Lincoln’s life?
Please express what you think were two of the major triumphs and two of the major tragedies in Lincoln’s life. Support your opinions with facts, too. I’d love to see if there are certain examples that most people find the worst and best moments of his life. He’s always been of interest to me, and I know many others as well.

Look forward to your opinions!

Winning the Presidency and winning the Civil War were certainly two of his triumphs. Among the tragedies of his life were the death of his beloved son and his wife’s lifelong mental illness.

I belleve one of the greatest tragedies was his life long depression suffered by him and a good part of his family. Had Lincoln had the ability to really focus on the day to day goings on in his life without the depression slapping him down on a daily basis, think what he may have accomplished over and above what he already had… tvtop_toptv

Tragedies- as expressed before, I say the death of Tad during the War. About a year and a half ago I became a father. I love my little girl with every breath I breathe. To lose her would be devastating, but to lose a loved one as president, in middle of a war. Was he able to fully grieve?

The other tragedy, in my mind, was his death. Reconstruction would have been drastically different had Lincoln lived out the rest of his life. Johnson, despite being a Southerner, HATED those people in the South. Lincoln would have had a softer hand. He would have welcomed the South back as we would after seeing brothers and sisters who we haven’t sen in a long time.

Triumphs- Getting rid of McClellan as Commander of the Army of the Potomac. Read some of Lincoln’s letters to the moron. Lincoln never presumed that he knew more than McClellan, but Lincoln demanded action from a man who loved to wait “til the right time.” There is no such thing in war.

When Grant and Sherman defeated Vicksburg and they were able to open up the Mississippi. This began the split of the South in two. Blockade runners had to run on the Atlantic seaboard and some of the Floridian seaboard. Union Naval vessels could begin to focus there attention to the runners. With both of these Generals, Lincoln finally had capable commanders in the field who knew what it took, and would take, to win the war.

I love President Lincoln, as apparently, you do too. He was an amazing man and human being.

The Life of Abraham Lincoln (Webster’s Spanish Thesaurus Edition)

41GGctfrApL. SL160 Does anyone know what an 1865 edition of the book Abraham Lincoln His Life and Public Services is worth?

Webster’s edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word’s meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster’s Online Dictionary.
