There is no secret door to an underground chamber in the Lincoln Memorial. There is a small door outside to the left at the bottom of the main steps that leads to the first (or lower) floor. There is also an elevator for handicapped access to both floors when a ranger is available to assist. The main floor with the statue and major quotes is up the long flight of steps. The lower level contains a small museum with additional quotes and information on Lincoln’s life and the building of the memorial. There is not really very much in it and all of the information is readily available online, in books, and other collections. For more information do a internet search on Lincoln Memorial. This will get you to an online ‘virtual tour’ to show you around.

Why is there a statue of Abraham Lincoln in Tijuana, Mexico?
I recently went on a trip to Mexico. Our group thought it was strange that one of the first things we saw upon arriving in the country was a statue of Abraham Lincoln. Does anyone know why it’s there?
Answer by A.P.
Because he freed the Mexicans from the tomato farms and vacationed in Tijuana the summer before he was assassinated.
Answer by jazzpoetmonk
not terribly strange at all and here’s why: Mexico’s president Benito Juárez during the early 1860s, exchanged friendly letters with Lincoln and Mexico remembers Lincoln’s opposition to the Mexican-American War.

Outside the United States
Statues of Lincoln can be found in other countries. In Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, is a 13-foot (4 m) high bronze statue, a gift from the United States, dedicated in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The U.S. received a statue of Benito Juárez in exchange, which is in Washington, D.C. Juárez and Lincoln exchanged friendly letters during the American Civil War, Mexico remembers Lincoln’s opposition to the Mexican-American War. (For his part, Juárez refused to aide the Confederacy and jailed those Confederates who sought his help.) There is also a statue in Tijuana, Mexico, showing Lincoln standing and destroying the chains of slavery. There are at least three statues of Lincoln in the United Kingdom — one in London by Augustus St. Gaudens, one in Manchester by George Grey Barnard and another in Edinburgh by George Bissell. In Havana, Cuba, there is a bust of Abraham Lincoln in the Museum of the Revolution, a small statue of him in front of the Abraham Lincoln School, and a bust of him near the Capitolio.

Why is there the statue of Abraham Lincoln?
I am not American, so i dont know American History well. I heard that the one in Washington DC is there because he abolished slavery, is that right?
Answer by Brett C
He was the president that abolished slavery, yes.
Answer by Lindsay
He was a president who had one of the many but extraordinary impacts on our country & culture. President Lincoln opened the door for a new way of thinking from a racial standpoint. That is why we honor his dedication and determination in our country, he has done Great things.
Answer by porthuronbilliam
Simple answer is that he preserved the Union of our country instead of allowing it to be split into a two separate, weaker countries that may have been hostile towards one another; his abolition of slavery, although something I’m sure Lincoln did believe strongly in came after the South ceded from the Union. European nations could have then continued to play these two nations against one another, blocking our “Manifest Destiny” and rise to a global superpower.
Excellent article fallenaway- thanks!

He was the president who preserved the “Union” & abolished slavery after winning the civil war. That is why he has a memorial statue in Washington DC.

I guess us Americans just love a president who shuts down newspapers who disagree with him, have people imprisoned who do not share his beliefs, have the blood of more Americans on his hands than anyone else, approve of a military policy allowing for the raping of innocent women, the starving of innocent women and children all because he wanted to preserve a union. Never mind the fact the south wanted to leave and according the the Declaration of Independence had the right to leave.
abraham lincoln is the greatest american president ever seat in White house. a man of integrity and honor. He abolished slavery and reunited the america from civil war.. live a colorful life but assasinate.. But i dearly love him and i think he is the one of the greatest man that walk in history.
Lots of reasons. He preserved the Union (we’d be two separate countries today if he hadn’t) and he ended slavery. He was also the first president to be assassinated, which made him the first American martyr.
His idea was to send them back to Liberia.
Yep, the Lincoln Memorial! He abolished slavery and reunited America during its civil war.
The statue is the Lincoln Statue paid for by freed ex-slaves to commemorate their paid emancipation by Presidential decree, that is slaves were allowed to purchase their freedom from owners if they lived in the federal District of Columbia.
The statue’s design shows a standing Lincoln extending his hand over the head of slave with newly broken chains. The composition is drawn from a famous speech by Frederic Douglass to commemorate the tortured relations between African-Americans and the Declaration of Independence. There is an annual celebration held at the park to commemorate the event.
