Did Abraham Lincoln have the right ideas about government all along?
These were his words:
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
…..Abraham Lincoln
What say you?

He was right

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. But it doesn’t offer anything to what we could do.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. Same argument.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. This is good advice and the banker boys and the wall street boys should be clued in.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
Well of course.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
Good advice for Savage and those similar.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence. I strongly agree with this one.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves. Key word here is permanently and if that is understood then I agree.

sounds nice, but my people were slaves when he farted that out…if you’re about building brotherhood, then there is no class structure to incite hatred within.
most of his rantings sound nice, and are specifically slanted toward a condition he knew of in his time..the plantation owners of the south were rich, and were utterly destroyed by the civil war..don’t know how much it helped the poor enslaved blacks, but it freed them from that particular form of oppression.
A penny saved is a penny earned; but it seems our financial institutions have lost or squandered all the pennies saved by us, and entrusted to them…when these banks and madoff closed shop, they didn’t state that they lost THEIR money, they lost YOUR money..THEY are recieving enough back from the govt, to give bonuses…but how many people have recoouped their entire savings portfolio from folded banks and crooks like Madoff?
Abe did a lot of talking, and like his protoge Obama, both are sure to disappoint a lot of people, simply for turning out to be nothing more than politicians..

Transition Game: How Hoosiers Went Hip-Hop
The many facets of basketball in contemporary America-as seen through the game in Indiana, a cradle of the sport-from an award-winning Sports Illustrated writer.
Jon Wertheim hadn’t kept up with his high school team until a recent game brought back a tide of memories: the angry sound of the buzzer, the same chiropractor’s-dream bleachers, and the sight of Coach McKinney-one of the most accomplished and lauded in the state. But there were differences, too: it was Jay-Z not Mellencamp that blared during warm-ups; the height of the players made them leviathans for a high school game; and flair, flavor, and pure athleticism seemed to be more appreciated than the fundamentals.
Clearly, the forces that have transformed Indiana and America-technology, multiculturalism, commercialization, in a world that is growing smaller and more complex-have a parallel impact on basketball. “Indiana,” as a local barber says, “is going hip-hop.” How are these elements-the new players of foreign heritage; the emphasis on style at the expense of shooting; the growth of the women’s game; the influence of big money everywhere-changing the sport?
Wertheim looks for answers by pointing a wide-angle lens at the many sides of the sport-the high school game, the NBA, and everything in between-to find the state of basketball in the state of basketball. Like H. G. Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights, Darcy Frey’s The Last Shot, and John Feinstein’s books, Transition Game is a story of heart, hustle, and an enduring game.

Gabby is correct. It’s not a Lincoln quote, but a quote from a pamphlet authored by William J. H. Boetcker (1873-1962) in 1916. While Lincoln was impressive in many ways, not even he could quote something written after his death. While Lincoln never quoted it, Ronald Reagan did quote it in a speech at the 1992 Republican Convention.
Great quote, but I am not sure who wrote it. Too bad those running the country won’t read it.
I do agree, but there are so many people who have forgotten what to be a true American means; so many people just want what they want, whether it’s rightfully theirs or not; so many people think they have all the rights they want even if they impinge on those of another person or group. Liberals don’t give a damn about anyone else’s rights but their own, they’ll even change in their minds the nature of something so that it’s ok to do what they want. Abortion? Just make an unborn baby in their minds to a “clump of cells” Capital Punishment? turn the aggressor into the victim, and, for good measure, attach racism to it.
People with an open mind and common sense strongly agree.
Every rational person
MRS.C: Nice catch
i agree but not so severely.
i believe there should be govt assistance for veterans, disabled, aid for school, and temporary unemployment when needed.
i believe Pres. Regan said it best (not exact) ” to handle the poor you have to make them uncomfortable in their poverty”
something like that. not enable them to buy gold chains or ed hardy sneakers.
i would need help for school and i work very hard so i’m a little iffy sometimes on absolutely no gov’t assistance.
however, i believe in a little more equality with the classes, i feel the rich are way too rich, the poor are way too poor, only because it makes for such a bad society and crime. cut taxes for all classes, find another way to supply the budget..if we can figure that out.
the republicans need to chill out on their social and scientific research issues if they want to succeed..and i’m sorry dump the christian coalition. sorry.
A guy on this thread just blamed ‘whitey’
I repeat; he blamed ‘whitey’
lmfao
WRONG!
These words were written by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister.
NOT Lincoln.
Ford writes: “you are using his description of a society in 1860 and putting it on like ill fiiting pants in 2009″
His description of an 1860 society also included the words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”
Is that statement putting on like ill fitting pants in 2009?
I’m glad to see Lincoln was well affiliated with the beliefs of his party.
And yes, I agree with it.
Great question and a great quote. Notice the libs can’t address this one? I guess we can all put to rest that BO can’t be compared to Lincoln except to show what a low-life fraud BO is.
Great Question…..
100% agree. It’s ironic that Obama was sworn in on the same Bible as Lincoln.
Sounds great. I will read that question again and again. So good. True statement. Thanks!
Absolutely.
Abraham Lincoln, Republican. And a lifelong hero of mine, even when I was a liberal Democrat.
Note to Gabby Girl, Bobo stated that Lincoln quoted it…he didn’t say he wrote it. Gotcha.
It is a good quote, but if you think about it, who was he speaking to and about.
White Males. Nobody else could do anything, so do you think that would hold true now, not.
I tell you who you should watch, your major corporations, now they are the ones running the country.
I agree
do you agree that giving 95% of the wealth to 5% of the people will NOT make for a decent life for all?
Agreed.
Here here… finally someone with a little bit of common sense. I applaud your ability to see through those hypnotic speaches that seem to put people in trances. He does’t even come close to be Abraham Lincoln.
Lets not forgetthat he stood before a group of people and said he is not a muslim, HE LIES!!!!!! most of his family has confirmed it, and he supports his homeland, and family who are indeed muslim, and the fact that louis farahkan, the leader of the muslim nation, if his friend!!!!! wake up sheeple!!
“If you can’t beat them, arrange to have them beaten”
George Carlin
Hope he’s not.Just look back in history at all of the taxes Lincoln started.
personal income tax
taxes on estates
public utilities
banks
insurance companies
wine
tobacco
beef
railroads
Thanks Mr. Lincoln
Abe was good for his time maybe Obama is good for this time. Ask this question again in 4 years.
Thank you for speaking the truth, it seems like every time someone states a opinion like this it’s as if you committed a crime. You are absolutely right about what you stated.
You conservatives will stop at nothing to denigrate Senator Obama. Would it be to much to try and understand his platform?
