why did abraham lincoln free the slaves???????
did he free them??? did he own any???

The city of Charleston, South Carolina, with its matchless Southern charm, has sparkled gem-like on the Carolina coast for more than 300 years. The Holy City, as it is known, has been a cherished home to generations of Charlestonians and an inviting destination for visitors from all over the world, who come to gape at the city’s grand mansions, tour its celebrated historic sites, and bask in both the warm sun and the famous Southern hospitality.
But below the gleaming surface of Charleston, there has always been a darker side–a second history that has been hidden and denied by those who retell the city’s story, and by those who have lived it. Charleston has played host to a wide variety of unsavory characters, and has seen scores of sordid deeds played out on its cobbled streets, beneath flickering gaslights.
Wicked Charleston, Volume 2: Prostitutes, Politics and Prohibition is a captivating companion to Mark Jones’s hugely popular Wicked Charleston. In this new book, Jones reveals more of the city’s seedy history–from drinking and prostitution to murder and crooked politics–offering a rarely seen glimpse at a sinister side of Charleston’s past.

What would happen if Abraham Lincoln was “pro-choice”? —READ first!?
When slavery was legal, not everyone (obviously) owned slaves. I am sure some people thought slavery was OK, but they personally did not own slaves.
Do you think, if one of these people was called pro-slavery, they would object, and prefer the term “pro-choice”?
They would say “I think slavery is wrong, but if you want to own slaves, that’s OK”
“I am not going to push my morals on you. If you want the choice to own slaves, that’s OK”
Where would America be if Abraham Lincoln was “pro-choice”?
Where would we be if he decided against enforcing a set standard for moral behavior?

The nation would have split of course and we would be in trouble. It is really true that a country divided against itself can not stand. Unfortunately it looks as if we are going to find out if that is true or not, possibly sooner than we think. Isn’t it a shame? We were once a great nation.

I see where you’re trying to go with this parallel and it’s a good one. I can see your point. To stand by while an act that one perceives as bad is happening is akin to taking part in it. To be pro-choice with abortion is just as immoral as being pro-choice with slavery. And looking at it from the fetus’ point of view, (assuming a fetus has the brain function to even truly be aware of it) you are most certainly right!
What you are missing, though, is that not everyone looks at abortion from the fetus’ point of view. Some people (in fact, most pro-choice people) look at it from a woman’s point of view. I see the abortion issue as an ill-concealed attempt to control women by controlling their reproductive abilities. I see denying a woman who wants an abortion as a form of sexual abuse and even rape. Her body is being used by someone she does not care for. She has no power to tell that person “no.” And even worse, no one is even trying to save her. So from the woman’s point of view, the pro-life stance is immoral.
Morality is a tricky subject and is ultimately up to the individual. When the government starts enforcing the values of one specific group at the expense of the other, then no one truly ends up as the winner.

Well, I see where you’re going with this, but there is a flaw in your logic. Allow me to explain.
There is a fundamental difference between slavery and abortion. Slavery usurped the rights and freedoms of a grown, sentient individual. They didn’t even have control over their own bodies, they were reduced to property. You said something interesting here: “I am not going to push my morals on you. If you want the choice to own slaves, that’s OK” The slaves themselves were not given any choice. They were capable of understanding and making that choice, if given the chance.
Abortion, however, does not interfere with the rights and freedoms of an individual, since the only individual involved is the woman and she has the freedom to do what she wants. A fetus is a collection of cells, and nothing more. The fact that those cells may or may not be a person at some later date is irrelevant. Before that time, it is not a person. It isn’t sentient.
Women need to have the right to decide for themselves if they are ready to be a mother. They need to decide if they are physically, mentally and financially prepared to give a child the care it would deserve. Forcing a woman to carry a pregnancy for nine months against her will is tantemount to slavery. It reduces her to a human incubator.
You base your position not in logic, but in a very old book that never allows for updates. That never makes for a very compelling argument. I also find it ironic that the same book that leads you to conclude that abortion is wrong also promotes slavery, and was used to defend it’s practice.
