How did liberals succeed in revising history and turning Abraham Lincoln into a democrat?
Answer by Susan
No one has exactly. But it is widely known that the principles of both parties have changed over time.
Answer by red
For those who know better, they didn’t.
Answer by Blessed Cheese Maker [sansfear]
No one claims he was a democrat, unless you are talking about republicans claiming the democrats claim he was a republican, which of course is simply stupid.

Abraham Lincoln: A Biography
Long considered a classic, Benjamin P. Thomas’s Abraham Lincoln: A Biography takes an incisive look at one of American history’s greatest figures. Originally published in 1952 to wide acclaim, this eloquent account rises above previously romanticized depictions of the sixteenth president to reveal the real Lincoln: a complex, shrewd, and dynamic individual whose exceptional life has long intrigued the public.
Thomas traces the president from his hardscrabble beginnings and early political career, through his years as an Illinois lawyer and his presidency during the Civil War. Although Lincoln is appropriately placed against the backdrop of the dramatic times in which he lived, the author’s true focus is on Lincoln the man and his intricate personality. While Thomas pays tribute to Lincoln’s many virtues and accomplishments, he is careful not to dramatize a persona already larger than life in the American imagination. Instead he presents a candid and balanced representation that provides compelling insight into Lincoln’s true character and the elements that forged him into an extraordinary leader. Thomas portrays Lincoln as a man whose conviction, resourcefulness, and inner strength enabled him to lead the nation through the most violent crossroads in its history.
Thomas’s direct, readable narrative is concise while losing none of the crucial details of Lincoln’s remarkable life. The volume’s clarity of style makes it accessible to beginners, but it is complex and nuanced enough to interest longtime Lincoln scholars. After more than half a century, Abraham Lincoln: A Biography is still an essential source for anyone interested in learning more about the many facets of the sixteenth president, and it remains the definitive single-volume work on the life of an American legend.

Would Abraham Lincoln be considered a Liberal Democrat today?
Conservatives love to bring up the fact the Abe Lincoln was a Republican. Would he be a Liberal Dem if he were alive today?
Answer by Wake Up America
No, he’d be a moderate. He was not for centralizing government and giving a free ride to the lazy ones.
Answer by Wise Guy
He’d be a liberal…probably not a democrat though
Answer by Pied Hussein Piper
No.
The media just told the truth then.
Answer by jeremy
In a sense yes; he was for centralizing power. It really is hard to say though, with his assassination no one can say for sure what differences history would tell as it concerns that turbulent time in our history. What seemed to prefix a humble victory turn nasty quick upon his death by his fervent cabinet.

Personally as a Republican I view Abe as a Liberal, even though I support his anti-slavery work I just can’t stand his stance on the size/control of the central government
I think Lincoln would probably be a democrat because he was against slavery which was pretty progressive thinking at that time.
But either way, America’s political parties have switched around a lot over the course of history. Typically, southerns are republicans now but during the Civil War southerns were democrats (party switch!) and there is a history of those changes happening since the formation of the Whig party. If conservatives are trying to argue that Lincoln was a republican and using that to further their own ends than they just don’t know history very well.
Modern conservatives would throw a hissy fit over Lincoln – a president who authoritatively established federal control over states’ rights? They would be positively enraged by Lincoln.
well now days the republicans wouldn’t have him as being to fair and logical and not self serving enough
lol I don’t know, but I feel sick
It’s a deceptively intriguing question this one, I scoffed at it at first but you know you’re right the actual party membership of Lincoln is just pretty much not factored in to any discussion. Of course, the relevance of it has diminished significantly in the context of the current political discourse considering any suggestion of the party of Lincoln’s time being somehow the unbroken lineage of that which bears it’s name today would be erroneous to say the least. Stood for VERY different things in very different times. Certainly though when associations are drawn between a much venerated figure of American history and your candidate you would obviously not place much emphasis on the discrepancy in party memberships in the press, just common sense.
It’s not a Democratic Party theme, but a racial theme of Lincoln freeing the slaves.
Review the history of both political parties for that answer. The views of both parties have changed over the years.
What political party would Roosevelt join as they are today? Lincoln? Go down the list and look into their policies, Most of our greatest presidents have been the liberals of their times.
Yeah same thing with Jefferson. It wasn’t “Jeffersonian Democracy” – it was “Jacksonian Democracy”
They had the media’s help again.
Many Libs have a Fantasy out look of Abe. they often say oh the party’s changed over time or whatever, but very few have studied or know the man. If they read any of his views they would be appalled. he basically keeped this country together using many of same principles that Bush used to keep us safe from terrorism
You must not be aware the republicans used to be liberal and democrats were conservative
He was a republican but not a “Dubyan”.
lol interesting isn’t it, everything this Joker is doing just gets more absurd
Abraham Lincoln doesn’t resemble a modern Democrat or Republican.
No Repub/Dem from that era resemble a modern Dem/repub.
If you had a junior high education you’d be aware of this.
No. I’ve not seen anyone suggest this…other than your baseless “question”.
Maybe you can explain the love of Harry Truman that so many Republicans espouse these days. Probably not, though.
Different parties, different times.
Edit: You asked, “Can someone please explain to me the love of Lincoln and hate for Republicans from Democrats.” My statement parallels yours, without the “hate” part, which was silly. Republicans have been extolling the virtues of “Give ‘em Hell Harry” since the days of Reagan. Bush likes to compare himself with Truman, and now the Republicans are giving Palin the Truman treatment (see link below). And please learn to spell.
The Republican Party and the Democratic Party of today have little resemblance to the Republican Party and the Democratic Party of 1960, let alone 1860.
In a lot of ways, it was very improbable that the Democratic Party would the party identified with championing civil rights – probably even more improbable that a Texan, Lyndon Johnson, would play such a big part in redefining the Democratic Party.
Whig was the party. Notice he was for freedom and not slavery like the current republicans. The two parties have flipflopped several times since then. At that time those for slavery were in the south and democrat, and the north was the bankers. In the 60s, Civil Rights flipped flopped, and now democrats are for liberty and justice.
I think he was a Republican. But that meant very different things back then than it does now.
he was a Republican
Dems conveniently like to forget that:
1. Lincoln, who freed the slaves, was Republican.
2. The major opposition to freeing the slaves came from Democrats.
3. MLK jr. was a Republican.
There’s really no explaining the Liberal mind.
Lincoln was a Republican just as Democrats used to be segregationists.
Democrats reference Lincoln because he was a progressive Illinois leader from humble beginnings just like Obama.
The fact that he was technically a Republican is just a label.
Well he was Republican, you see…..he gave the blacks the opportunity to support themselves….get jobs and earn money…be held down by no man.
What happened?
Abe Lincoln was a down state Republican. Even back then he fought Chicago political hacks like Obama. There is no comparison between the two.
You have noticed that democrats love a good lie and they have the uncanny ability to claim things so stupid that no even corrects them
