He freed the slaves, and kept the United States united by beating the South and all he got in return was a bullet in his head from a crazy Southerner.

Abraham Lincoln is considered by historians to be the greatest president, he has continually been voted as the best president, #1, over all of the others, probably because he faced the greatest difficulty of any president during his term. George Washington has usually been ranked #2 by historians, because of his being the first president, and having to set many of the precedents for the country to follow over the years.

Both men have been honored by having their birthdays designated as national holidays. Sometime in recent history (25-30 years ago), it had been decided to honor both men simultaneously by having Feb 15 designated as Presidents Day, rather than having two national holidays, Feb 12 and Feb 22. Some States however have opted to keep one of their birthdays as a holiday in addition to Presidents Day. In Illinois for example, Lincoln’s birthday is still maintained as a holiday because it was Lincolns home State.

It isnt that his birthday, Feb 12 , is so important, it is that HE was that important to the nation to honor his memory on that day.

The other presidents are not so honored because maybe they themselves were not so great, but probably more so because with another 40 some birthdays to commemorate, that would be almost another extra holiday per week on the calendar, or approximately 16% of the business days in the year…too many.

Do you think we should celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday?
Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday

Answer by kevin_schultz
Depends what you mean by celebrate – he was an important element in American history, he was a president that oversaw one of the most dire events in US history, and managed to get through the time with the country intact. Yes he made mistakes, and covering up those mistakes does him an injustice, but they don’t particularly detract (IMO) from his successes as a president and as a person.

However, I don’t think we should have it as a federal holiday. This is nothing to do with Mr. Lincoln, and everything to do with the fact that we have too many Federal holidays.

Now – would I celebrate it? Eh, probably not – but I’m not really a celebratory kind of guy.

Not necessarily, no. Neither should we celebrate Dr. King’s.

You do know it used to be a Federal Holiday? As well as George Washington’s birthday? The two then got watered down and combined into “President’s Day” so we wouldn’t have two Mondays off in February….

How come Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is not a national holiday, and yet Martin Luther King’s is?
Abraham Lincoln was the greatest president we have ever had. This doesn’t make sense to me……People like Martin Luther King would never have their freedom if it weren’t for Abraham Lincoln….

Answer by kim14electra
We celebrate all the former presidents including Abraham Lincoln on Presidents’ day

Answer by ichyedad
Until several years ago, Lincoln’s birthday and Washington’s birthday were both national holidays. To honor MLK, Lincoln and Washington’s bdays were combined into President’s Day. Eventually it will be known as Obama Day.

Answer by child of god
MLK ‘s holiday replaced Lincolns holiday, thats the power of the NAACP.
They whine louder than anyoneelse.
